Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning

Some parents and educators have expressed concern that standards promote memorization of bullet-points in lieu of critical thinking. While the claim may have merit if teachers implement them improperly, standards provide a rich framework accommodating all the classical styles of learning, from understanding the definition of a concept to designing a creative synthesis of information in the form of a project or presentation. Ultimately, standards ensure teachers have tools sufficient to quantify student learning, and the public has a method with which to ensure teachers fulfill the great responsibilities entrusted to them: educating the next generation.
